Too Heavy to Hold

I’m meditating on how to know when it is time to speak this dayclean. Hold your tongue is a solid suggestion, especially for those of us with the ‘gift of gab’ (hey Gemini girl I see you). We would be wise to weigh our words with care, to be as sure as we reasonably can they will land as intended.

But we would be just as wise to recognize there will be times when we must speak truth to power. Give thanks for the screen queen Regina King and One Night in Miami; in addition to bringing together the stories of those beautiful black men, the movie gave us Leslie Odom Jr.’s Speak Now.  So many of the grandmas, mothers, aunties, sisters and others in our communities could not fully exercise the right to speak up, and I am convinced he silencing of their voices cost generations in ways we are still paying. The next generation is listening to what we have to say QueenSiS, let’s speak now. #SpeakNow
