Passage Time

Life do be lifin, and adulting is a full full-time job…but I give thanks that I’m a Grown Woman, hat tip to the Queen Bee Beyoncé. I’m profoundly grateful for the ever shifting yet ever present circle of women who helped me to reach this level of womanhood.

This dayclean I’m meditating on how the horror of chattel enslavement disrupted our familial and communal rites of passages. Deep lamentations for the erasure of so many of those ancient African traditions - the intentional circles, rituals, and societies that were made available to each person at various points in their lives, to help them effectively progress through life. I know we do have sororities, fraternities and other groups, but just think how transformational it would be if we ALL relearn and reclaim the best  practices of our ancestors’ rites of passage for each and every child in our communities going forward.  #IKnowMyRites
