Facing Death

I’m meditating on how to live to die this dayclean. I know it’s not a holiday jingle, but Coolio’s (may he rest in peace) Gangster’s Paradise feels oddly appropriate.

We held our Donning of the Kente ceremony for a few graduates on my campus yesterday. A libation service is always a part of the event; we use it to invoke the best energies of our Ancestors for our journey ahead. I’m hopeful these kinds of traditions will encourage the next generation to think of dying and death in a different way. To see the value in being up close and personal with our elders, especially as they enter the final stages of their life. And to see the benefit in living life with an understanding of death. #lifeanddeath
